This reviews the Oakley Sutro Lite Sweep as a model. The unit above is the exact one tested; other colourways differ in paint and fitted lens, not in anything scored here. Lens tints and coatings are deliberately not part of this review, they are measured and scored separately in the lens research section.

Verdict

The Sweep is the style conscious recommendation. The retro Eyeshade shape is the most iconic thing in the modern Sutro line, and with a good colourway it is flat out amazing. Two honest warnings come with it. First, the look is specific: I have seen it on faces it does not suit, including some pro riders, so try it on before you commit. Second, the lens reaches far down over the cheek. Squint and your cheeks touch it, and if you have fuller cheeks they will touch constantly. If you want the sensible Sutro, take the Sutro Lite S. If you want this one, you already know.

The frame

The Sweep takes the sweep lens shape Oakley made famous on the Eyeshade in the eighties and puts it on the Sutro Lite platform. Single axis shield, rubberised straight temples, and a lens that drops lower over the face than any other frame in the family. The retro geometry is the point, and also the source of its one real problem.

Against the Lite you can see where the Sweep's extra cheek coverage sits, which is exactly the part that touches my face in the Comfort section.

Protection

Large sweep shape, good covered area. The deep lower edge covers more of the cheek region than the other Sutros.

Grip

Rubberised temples like the Sutro Lite, so better than the original Sutro and still short of a wraparound. On rough mountain bike terrain it creeps down the nose like the rest of the family.

Ventilation

Good. Single axis standoff, air moves.

Comfort

Here is the catch. The lens comes down very far over the cheek. When I squint, my cheeks touch the lens edge. With fuller cheeks the contact is constant, not occasional. And unlike a frame with a removable bottom rim, there is nothing you can take off: the thing touching you is the lens itself, so it cannot be modified away. If your face is on the fuller side, try before you buy, and mean it.

Style

The standout of everything I own, and the reason this frame exists. Retro, iconic, and with a good colourway genuinely amazing. The Celeste with Road Jade is exactly that pairing. The honesty clause: this look is a specific one, and it does not suit every face. Unlike most sunglasses, where fit decides comfort, here fit decides whether the style works at all.

Quality

Oakley current generation standard, same construction as the rest of the modern line.

Prescription

Very good, it is a Sutro: single axis, real room behind the lens, an insert fits without special clearance work.

Ecosystem

Shares the Sutro Lite ecosystem, with one trick that deserves its own paragraph: the frame is essentially the same as the Sutro Lite, and the lenses interchange. Buy a Sweep, add a spare Sutro Lite lens, and you effectively own both pairs of sunglasses for the price of one frame and one lens.

Who should buy it

Riders who want the retro look and have tried it on their own face. Not the fuller cheeked, who will fight the lens edge daily, and not anyone whose first requirement is retention. For the all rounder in the family, the Sutro Lite S is my pick.
