FAQ

How do I install and remove the insert?

The insert clips in and out of the frame in seconds. No tools needed.

Will wraparound sunglasses distort my vision?

This can happen with very curved prescription lenses. That is why we designed our inserts with a much flatter optical geometry. Getting highly curved prescription sport lenses right can be a bit of a dice roll, especially with stronger prescriptions. Our flatter insert design avoids that problem and gives more predictable, comfortable vision.

Can I read my bike computer, watch, or phone with progressive lenses?

Yes. Progressive prescription inserts are one of our specialties. We have special processes in place to make sure the fit and centering are accurate, which is where we are clearly stronger than many standard insert options. We also have access to a large catalog of progressive lenses, so we can choose the best design for your sport, posture, and prescription.

Are prescription inserts better than direct prescription sport lenses?

It depends. Inserts make it easy to change the outer Oakley lens for different light and terrain. You can use one prescription insert with low-light, mixed-light, and bright-light lenses. Direct prescription sport lenses can be lighter and easier to clean, but you lose that easy lens-swapping flexibility. In high wind, direct prescription sport lenses can also let in more air and feel uncomfortable for some riders.

Can I use the same prescription insert with multiple lens tints?

Yes. This is one of the best reasons to use an insert. You can use one prescription insert with different Oakley shield lenses, for example low light, mixed lighting, and bright light.

What prescription values do you need to make the insert?

We need sphere, cylinder, axis, and pupillary distance. If you order progressive lenses, we also need your add value. You can upload your prescription during checkout or email it later.

Do I need pupillary distance?

Yes. Pupillary distance helps us center the lenses correctly in the insert. This is especially important for progressive lenses and stronger prescriptions.

Can you make lenses with astigmatism correction?

Yes. We can make prescription inserts with astigmatism correction. Your prescription just needs to include cylinder and axis values.

Will a strong prescription look thick or feel heavy?

Our inserts are designed to be as light as possible. Even with the heaviest prescription options, the clip usually weighs about 13 g, which is very little. If weight is a major concern, tell us before ordering. We have many lens options available and can choose a lighter material or custom-cut lenses to reduce weight further.

Which lens material is best for impact resistance and low weight?

Trivex is usually the best choice. Trivex and polycarbonate both offer strong impact resistance, but Trivex is lighter for the same prescription. For very strong prescriptions, polycarbonate can sometimes be better because it can be thinner and may create fewer clearance issues.

Is Trivex better than polycarbonate for sport sunglasses?

Trivex is lighter and has excellent impact resistance, so it is our default recommendation for most sport prescription inserts. For stronger prescriptions, polycarbonate can sometimes be the better choice because it is thinner and can help with clearance behind the shield.

Will prescription inserts fog more than normal glasses?

Fogging is usually caused by poor ventilation. Inserts do not automatically fog more, but you need airflow around the inside of the lens. Make sure the frame is not pushed too close to your face and that the insert is not touching wet clothing, skin, or other surfaces. Anti-fog or hydrophobic coating also helps.
